Compare tent footprints and tarps for ground protection. Learn the trade-offs in fit, weight, and durability to choose the right camping ground cloth for your setup.
Quick answer
For most campers, a tent footprint is the better choice because it's cut to match your tent's floor, so it protects without sticking out. A tarp is more versatile and cheaper, but you'll need to fold it carefully to avoid water pooling under your tent.
Why a footprint fits better
A footprint is shaped to match a specific tent model, so it covers the floor area exactly. This means no extra fabric sticking out where rain can collect and seep underneath. The CORE 12 Person Instant Tents Footprint, for example, is sized for the 12 Person Instant Cabin Tent models #40027 and #40064, and the 6 Person version fits multiple 6-person instant cabin tents. That precision is the main reason footprints outperform tarps for ground protection.
When a tarp makes sense
A tarp is a general-purpose ground cloth. You can use it under a tent, as a picnic blanket, or as a sun shade. It's often cheaper and more flexible. But if you use a tarp under a tent, you have to fold it so it doesn't extend beyond the tent's edges. If it does, rain can run down the tent wall, hit the tarp, and pool between the tarp and the tent floor, defeating the purpose of ground protection.
The trade-off: convenience vs. versatility
Footprints offer hassle-free setup: they have elastic loops on the corners that align with your tent's poles, so staking them out is quick. Tarps require more thought: you need to measure, fold, and sometimes cut grommets. But a tarp can serve multiple roles on a trip, which is a real advantage if you're trying to pack light. The choice comes down to whether you value exact fit and ease, or multi-use flexibility.
Footprint or tarp: the trade-off
- Exact fit: Choose a footprint if you want a ground cloth that matches your tent's floor dimensions exactly, without any overhang. Check your tent model number to find the matching footprint.
- Multi-use flexibility: Choose a tarp if you need a ground cloth that can also serve as a picnic blanket, sun shade, or gear cover. If you go with a tarp, fold it so it's slightly smaller than your tent floor.
- Setup speed: Footprints with elastic corner loops are faster to stake out under your tent than a tarp that needs folding and positioning. Practice staking your footprint at home so setup is quick on site.
